Assistant Teacher

Purpose of the position

  • To assist lead teachers in the day-to-day running of classroom.

  • To provide stimulating and varied programs of play and learning opportunities.

  • To ensure the safety and wellbeing of the children.

Primary responsibilities

  • To assist in the setting up and clearing away of all activities and equipment.

  • To ensure high standards of hygiene and safety are maintained at all times.

  • To ensure that any information received concerning the children is kept confidential at all times.

  • To actively encourage children’s progress in all areas of development, types and stages of play through interaction and extension of play activities.

  • To attend staff meetings as requested.

  • To attend training as requested.

  • To work as part of a team and support colleagues.

  • To encourage the participation and involvement of all parents of children attending the preschool.

  • To be flexible with the working practices of the preschool.

  • To be prepared to help when other areas of the preschool may be short staffed, or with domestic duties or other duties as specified by the preschool directors.

  • Direct all parent inquiries, no matter how trivial, to lead teachers.

  • Immediately report any suspicious person and/or activity to the security guard and directors.

Requirements

The assistant teacher must meet the following basic requirements:

  • At least 1 year experience in a preschool classroom at the age level (internship could be considered to meet this criteria)

  • CPR/First Aid certification

  • Have the physical capacity to work with preschool/Kindergarten aged children (includes but is not limited to: bending, minor lifting, working on the floor)

  • 40 hours of DCF Training
